Allowing a stranger to come to your home can make you feel uneasy. Do research before you hire a locksmith as it ensures the one you hire will work for your best interests and not their own. Some words that describe a good locksmith would be reliable, efficient, affordable and dependable. Getting personal recommendations is the best way to find a great locksmith. Hiring someone that that has been used by those you trust will make you feel better because you get an honest review. You can also look at reviews online but these are hard to determine how reliable or honest they are. Don’t let anyone into your home unless you’re sure they’re a locksmith! The person should also be able to provide identification and/or business card. Not all companies are bonded, insured and licensed as they’re not required to be. Working with one that is will give you piece of mind. When a locksmith is bonded and insured, your property will be protected as licensed companies are much more trustworthy.

Texan Lock & Key Explains the Differences Between Rekeying & Changing The Locks On Your Home
What is Rekeying: The option to rekey your home is a definite choice and has been around for a long time. The locking system has an internal mechanism that is called a tumbler. The tumbler is able to be maneuvered and changed. That would make it so that a key that would have fit in the lock before will no longer work. This option will be more cost effective since you are not having to purchase all new hardware. The locks will stay the same while the adjustment is done internally. The problem is that some of the locks are not able to accommodate this type of change. Another reason that this may be a better option is if you are having numerous locks rekeyed instead of a single lock. If you want to have your locks rekeyed you need to call a professional locksmith to do the work for you.
How to Change Locks: There are many reasons that changing out the lock all together is a better option. The best thing about changing out the entire lock is that you can rest easy knowing that all the working parts are new and in great shape. Once you start to mess with the older locks they can start to stick and potentially malfunction. When you choose to come out and change out the locks on the house you can pick out a lock that is great quality. The quality of the lock is important when you want to secure your home. It also makes it easier if at some point in the future you need to have it rekeyed. The negative of having the locks changed are that the work will take longer and it will end up costing you more money. If you have the means to replace the locks it is a great idea to go this route.

When you’re looking to replace your home’s locks, you might find a choice of many kinds of locks. Texan Lock and Key will help you distinguish a pin tumbler lock from a wafer tumbler lock. Both are cylinder locks and have their own benefits and drawbacks. We will talk about both and see if one will fit your home’s security best.
Tubular Pin Tumbler Locks
First we will discuss pin tumbler locks, or sometimes called a Yale lock because they are the major company of pin tumbler locks. Pin tumbler lock is a mechanism which uses pins of different lengths to set the lock. It is one of the most common types of cylinder locks that are used among radial locks and tubular pin tumbler locks. The cylindrical opening of the keyway is where the rotating plugs are in front. When turned in a certain direction, it will unlock the pin tumbler lock. Now beyond the keyway are protruding ridges that prevent other keys being used and also prevent burglars from picking the locks.
Wafer Tumbler Locks
A wafer tumbler lock isn’t nearly as commonly used as a pin tumbler lock. A wafer lock uses a set of flat wafers to prevent the lock from opening unless it is unlocked with the correct key. The wafer lock uses a similar mechanism as a pin lock. A wafer tumbler locks has a cylindrical wafer that uses a group of flat wafers where the cylindrical plugs are attached to them. They project outward of the lock casing. The plugs are spring loaded inside of the wafer, making it hard for the plug to rotate without the proper alignment of plugs. At the center or core of each wafer, there is an outlet in a rectangular shape that is placed in varying vertical positions making it hard to pick. You need the correct key to unlock the wafers and in a sense, the door. Every wafer lock will slightly change from each manufacturer. The most common wafer lock is a single-bitted, or a five-wafer configuration that is often used for cabinets and table drawers. There are wafer locks that are double sided meaning you will need to use a key to unlock both sides of a door. These are good to keep burglars from breaking a nearby window and reaching through to unlock the door.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that it gets calls from more than 4,000,000 locked-out motorists every year. This number is on the rise each year due to keyless ignition and sophisticated electronic anti-theft systems. With the busy new year upon us it may happen easier than you think. This frustration and panic can be worse if you’re late for work, trying to get somewhere on time or the weather is bad. Worse if you’re stuck outside the car with an armful of grocery bags or a child is inside strapped in their car seat. When this happens, it can make us feel victimized and open to hazards around us. Try and stay calm and remember a few simple steps when it happens. Doing so will make the ordeal less stressful.
Steps to Take When You’ve Locked Your Keys in the Car
1. Call for assistance immediately. Doing so needs to be the first thing on your mind. Don’t just call anyone though. Make sure you call sometime that can actually help you and someone who can get there fast. This will get you help right away and keep you safe as your risk of robbery or harassment will be reduced.
2. Move to a safe area. This is more important if you’re a female. Dark parking lots aren’t the safest place to wait for help if you’re alone so move to a lit area or where other people are while you wait. This will make it easier to see help arriving and being around other people will also give you a little support system that can help you mentally when you’re anxious.
3. Make sure your phone is working. Before you leave the house, make sure your phone is charged. This will ensure you can call for help that may include the police. If help is unable to arrive in time you can call for a ride or for help should you get into a dangerous situation and you may need to direct help to where you are.
4. Outside support. Your family will start to panic if you don’t get where you’re supposed to be on time. Make sure that someone else knows where you are and what has happened.
5. You may be able to get a temporary key from the dealer to open the door or make sure you have a spare in your purse or wallet. You can also have a hidden on the car in a magnetic box.
Auto Lockout Service Cost
There may be a standard fee when the help comes through car insurance companies or roadside assistance plans. Charges can add up depending on mileage or if the company has a minimum charge. If the key needs to be replaced for some reason, then there will be an added cost. If the locksmith is called out on the weekends, late at night or a holiday for example, the cost will also increase.
