Tubular Pin Tumbler Locks

First we will discuss pin tumbler locks, or sometimes called a Yale lock because they are the major company of pin tumbler locks. Pin tumbler lock is a mechanism which uses pins of different lengths to set the lock. It is one of the most common types of cylinder locks that are used among radial locks and tubular pin tumbler locks. The cylindrical opening of the keyway is where the rotating plugs are in front. When turned in a certain direction, it will unlock the pin tumbler lock. Now beyond the keyway are protruding ridges that prevent other keys being used and also prevent burglars from picking the locks.

Wafer Tumbler Locks

A wafer tumbler lock isn’t nearly as commonly used as a pin tumbler lock. A wafer lock uses a set of flat wafers to prevent the lock from opening unless it is unlocked with the correct key. The wafer lock uses a similar mechanism as a pin lock. A wafer tumbler locks has a cylindrical wafer that uses a group of flat wafers where the cylindrical plugs are attached to them. They project outward of the lock casing. The plugs are spring loaded inside of the wafer, making it hard for the plug to rotate without the proper alignment of plugs. At the center or core of each wafer, there is an outlet in a rectangular shape that is placed in varying vertical positions making it hard to pick. You need the correct key to unlock the wafers and in a sense, the door. Every wafer lock will slightly change from each manufacturer. The most common wafer lock is a single-bitted, or a five-wafer configuration that is often used for cabinets and table drawers. There are wafer locks that are double sided meaning you will need to use a key to unlock both sides of a door. These are good to keep burglars from breaking a nearby window and reaching through to unlock the door.
